If you’re a mom who has been home caring for your kids full time but you’re getting ready to re-enter the work force, there’s lots of help on the web. In my pre-Yahoo! Tech life, I wrote a lot about work-family balance and job-hunting advice, and I’ve seen the Internet emerge as an invaluable assistant to help women who have taken a step back from the workplace to care for families to step back in.
The most obvious advantage is it enables us to keep in touch with colleagues, mentors, and former bosses by sending occasional emails and instant messages. When it comes to looking for your next job, your network of past and present colleagues is key, so keeping in touch with them is very, very important. Instant communication makes it easy and emails are less disruptive than phone calls.
For your bookmarks, she mentions these helpful web sites and resources:
Jobsandmoms.com – A web site for professional women looking for flexible work.
Mom Corps – A staffing firm that specializes in placing women who have been out of the work force in project, part-time, and consultant positions.
To these, I’ll add a few of my own favorite web sites and tips:
Lynda.com – Take stock of your skills as well as a gap in your skills that you think you’ll need to fill to pursue the work you want to do outside the home. Check out Lynda.com for a rich library of every kind of IT course you want to take. You can also check with your local—and far-flung colleges—that offer online courses that you can work on when your time (short as it is) allows.
WomenatWorkNetwork – Connects women interested in part-time and full-time work and employers.
Knock ‘Em Dead – Martin Yate provides some of the best resume-writing advice I’ve seen, and some specific advice to women returning to work on this page.
Job-hunt.org – A great overall job-search web site filled with links to good job-search advice, web sites, and resources.
That’s a start. If you’ve got some other resources that have helped you get back to work, please share. And if you have any questions, please ask away. This is one of my favorite topics to talk about.
